It is the first such center of excellence in a private hospital in Sri Lanka providing the complete range of laparoscopic treatment options for endometriosis in par with other endometriosis centers of the world.
‘Laparoscopy’ means ( ‘Laparo’- abdominal cavity, ‘scopy’ - to view) to look inside the abdominal cavity. This is achieved by inserting a very small telescope into the abdominal cavity and viewing the inside on a screen. The surgeon performs the operation using very small instruments inserted through the abdominal wall, while looking at the screen. At the end of the surgery the patient will only have a few hardly visible cuts on the abdomen.
Laparoscopy has many advantages over conventional open surgery. It provides the surgeon a vastly superior view of the internal structures to perform the required surgery meticulously. Additionally, the patient will have the advanteges of an excellent cosmetic outcome, less pain after surgery, quicker return to daily activities and work and less requirment for pain medication.
Surgery for endometriosis should be performed laparoscopically to achieve the optimum results. Laparoscopy provides a magnified view of all anatomical structures in the pelvis which enables the surgeon to navigate these delicate structures with pinpoint accuracy and overall perform a far better surgical procedure as opposed to laparotomy. Therefore, laparotomy(open surgery) should be avoided.
